Research Summary
The Border Air Quality Strategy- Western Pilot Studies presents a combination of research projects aimed at working towards the development of an international strategy for the Georgia Basin-Puget Sound airshed.
In response to Health Canada’s request, the work proposed includes research and analysis to determine sources of greatest concern in each airshed and the development of a common basis of understanding between Canada and the United States regarding transboundary air quality conditions, potential future trends, and associated impacts on human health.
We intend to address particular health and environmental concerns in each airshed by assessing exposures related to specific categories of emissions sources, at both the community and individual level, within each airshed.
We are conducting detailed mapping, modelling and validation studies with consideration to the local geography and meteorology to be used in lifecourse epidemiological studies from birth outcomes to cardiovascular effects in vulnerable populations such as older adults or individuals with compromised health.
Together, these projects will contribute to a broader understanding of the economic burdens of air pollution and better position Canada to further negotiate transboundary air reductions with the United States and to make further progress in setting stringent targets for Canadian air quality.
